Shirley Ann Carson
Shirley spent her early working life as secretary to a director of a City Merchant Bank, then had her two sons and when they went to school, trained as a primary school teacher, with music as her special subject. Shirley cared for her mother from the age of thirteen, when her father died. Her beloved husband contracted Alzheimer’s at the age of seventy and she cared for him for twenty years until he died, fortunately still knowing who she was. Shirley was able to get help and attend courses at Carer’s Leeds which were excellent and she had a most supportive doctor. She was keen to be involved with DECIDE because whilst caring can be a pleasure for the carer, it is also extremely demanding mentally and physically. Shirley hopes that the resulting questionnaire produced will highlight carers’ needs at an early stage of their caring role so their lives are not blighted.
John is one of the carers on the project steering panel. He has been caring for his grandfather for 7 years.
Previous to this John worked in the fraud team at GEMoney, and before to that he was a credit Underwriter for GEMoney. He has also worked for the Halifax Bank.
